Event Recording: Perceptions of Policing in America

In 2020, the police killing of George Floyd sparked mass protests and calls to defund law enforcement agencies. Police departments were hit with a wave of retirements and struggled to find new recruits. Just five years later, surveys show a rebound in public confidence and in rates at which people report crime to the police.

As law enforcement officers from around the nation gathered in Washington for Police Week 2025, the Council on Criminal Justice hosted a candid conversation about the state of policing in America, current public perceptions of how police are performing, and the president’s executive order on law enforcement.
