Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a lifelong Houstonian, was elected the 30th Sheriff of Harris County (TX) in November of 2016. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is the largest sheriff’s office in Texas, and the third largest nationwide. Gonzalez leads more than 5,000 employees in protecting 4.5 million residents across the county’s 1,700 square miles. After retiring from the Houston Police Department in 2009, Gonzalez served three terms on the Houston City Council, representing District H. He was elected by his peers to serve as Vice Mayor Pro-Tem in 2010, and was appointed Mayor Pro-Tem in 2012 by then-Mayor Annise Parker. A CCJ member, Gonzalez previously served on the Council’s National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice.
