On Dec. 7, 2016, Justice Michael Boggs was sworn in by Governor Nathan Deal as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Georgia. Previously, Justice Boggs served as a judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals, a Superior Court judge for Waycross Judicial Circuit, and State Representative to the Georgia General Assembly.

Justice Boggs obtained his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Psychology from Georgia Southern College in 1985. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Mercer University School of Law in 1990. While in law school, Justice Boggs was a member of the Moot Court Board and participated on the ABA/LSD and National Moot Court competition teams. At Mercer, Justice Boggs was inducted into the Order of Barristers and was elected to the Student Government Association. Among his legislative accomplishments, Justice Boggs authored the “Child Protection Act,” a bill aimed at protecting children from sexual predators. During his legislative service, Justice Boggs was named the Most Outstanding Freshman Member of the General Assembly and was named by Georgia Trend Magazine as one of “Forty Under Forty” Rising Stars in Georgia.

In 2011, Justice Boggs was elected by his fellow Superior Court judges to serve as Secretary-Treasurer of the Council of Superior Court Judges, and served as Vice Chair of the Council’s Legislation Committee. While a Superior Court Judge, Justice Boggs founded the Waycross Judicial Circuit Drug Court Program, served as its Presiding Judge, and served as a member of the Judicial Council of Georgia’s Standing Committee on Accountability Courts. He served as a member of the Criminal Justice Reform Council for Georgians in 2011 as an appointee of the Chief Justice and was appointed by Governor Deal to co-chair the Council from 2012 to the present.

In 2011, Justice Boggs served as a member of the Georgia Judicial Nominating Commission and currently serves on the Advisory Board for the CSG Justice Center, where he also serves on the Executive Committee. Justice Boggs serves on the Supreme Court of Georgia Committee on Justice for Children and the National Center for State Courts Judicial Peer Group on Evidence-Based Sentencing and Committee on Fines, Fees, and Bail Reform.

An ardent supporter of accountability courts, Justice Boggs founded the Waycross Judicial Circuit Drug Court Program, served as its Presiding Judge, and served as a member of the Judicial Council of Georgia’s Standing Committee on Accountability Courts.
