ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

implications of artificial intelligence in criminal justice

The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and criminal justice presents significant challenges and opportunities. AI has the potential to enhance efficiency, fairness, and effectiveness across the criminal justice system. However, these advancements also raise significant, understudied, and undertheorized concerns related to privacy, bias, accountability, system capacity, and public oversight.

In June of 2024, CCJ hosted a convening of three dozen experts from across criminal justice sectors, the technology industry, and civil society to facilitate dialogue on the key issues for policy and practice. CCJ Senior Fellow Jesse Rothman led the effort and produced a brief summarizing key themes from the convening. Rothman’s expertise in both criminal justice policy and artificial intelligence is helping us thoughtfully navigate the complex and nuanced issues surrounding technology and justice.

By grounding the conversation around AI and criminal justice in evidence, data, collaboration, and a commitment to public welfare, the Council on Criminal Justice is helping establish a foundation for ongoing engagement and policy development that aims to ensure AI is used responsibly and effectively in the criminal justice system to advance justice, equity, liberty, and safety for all.
