James Forman, Jr.

Professor, Yale Law School

Forman is the author of Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America, which won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. A former law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, he spent his early years as a public defender, and later co-founded the Maya Angelou Public Charter School, an alternative school for dropouts and youth who had previously been arrested. The school later expanded to serve youth inside Washington, D.C.’s secure juvenile facility.
