Communications Director

Erik Opsal directs communications strategy at the Council on Criminal Justice, working to increase the public profile and impact of CCJ, its members, and its research. He and his team lead media outreach, connect journalists with CCJ’s work, and oversee digital promotion via the website, social media, and email. He also collaborates closely with the membership, development, and policy teams.

Prior to joining the Council, Opsal spent more than 15 years working in strategic communications across nonprofits, government, academia, and politics. Most recently, he led communications at NYU’s Center for Social Media and Politics, an academic research institute studying how the online information environment impacts democracy. Prior to that, Opsal held communications roles with the YMCA of Greater New York, the Brennan Center for Justice, and U.S. Senator Russ Feingold.

Opsal holds a BS in political science and journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children.
