John Maki, Director of the Council’s Task Force on Long Sentences, has spent his career working to improve public safety outcomes as a non-profit executive, senior state governmental leader, and criminal justice policy expert. He served as Executive Director of Illinois’ public safety research and grant-making agency and led the state’s nonpartisan prison watchdog organization. Most recently, he served as Director of Innovations at the Alliance for Safety and Justice, where he partnered with community-based organizations and government leaders to design and implement criminal justice reforms and expand victim services.
