Event Recording: Second Chances: Sustaining Progress

New data show recidivism among people released from prison has declined about 20% over the past decade, alongside second chance policies and employer-led initiatives that have expanded with bipartisan support. Yet that progress may be fragile, as high-profile failures can erode public confidence and prompt policy retrenchment.

As part of Second Chance Month activities, the Council on Criminal Justice’s Centering Justice initiative and a panel of experts examined how second chance policies are working in practice, what drives success and failure, and what it will take to sustain progress over time.

Panelists

  • Daryl Atkinson, Executive Director, Second Chance Federation
  • Nan Gibson, Executive Director, PolicyCenter, JPMorganChase
  • Rob Jeffreys, Director, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services
  • Khalil Cumberbatch, Director of Engagement and Partnerships, Council on Criminal Justice
  • Marc Levin, Chief Policy Counsel, Council on Criminal Justice
