Private gun ownership in America has surged in the past several years, even as authorities have intensified enforcement against illegal firearms—cracking down on “ghost” guns, tightening oversight of licensed dealers, and seizing more weapons from the streets. Meanwhile, violent crime, particularly homicide, saw a historic rise followed by a historic decline.
