Before taking the reins at the Legal Defense and Educational Fund in 2013, Ifill taught for 20 years at the University of Maryland Law School. While on the faculty, Ifill launched a series of law clinics, including one of the first to challenge legal barriers to reentry. Her 2008 book, On the Courthouse Lawn: Confronting the Legacy of Lynching in the 21st Century, is credited with laying the foundation for contemporary conversations about lynching and reconciliation.
