Geoff Burkhart is the county executive for the Community Legal Services Department in Travis County, Texas. Burkhart leads efforts to increase access to counsel and quality of representation for persons accused of crimes. He is a criminal justice leader and reformer who has devoted his career to improving outcomes for poor and marginalized persons.
Before working for Travis County, Burkhart was executive director for the Texas Fair Defense Project, executive director for the Texas Indigent Defense Commission, and held multiple positions at the American Bar Association. He also served as president of the National Association for Public Defense, where he earned the respect of his colleagues and peers around the country. Burkhart’s articles on current issues and events in the criminal justice community have been published in numerous legal journals.
