Tani Cantil-Sakauye

Member, Board of Trustees

Chief Justice, California Supreme Court

A former prosecutor who has served nearly 30 years on California courts, Cantil-Sakauye is the first Asian-Filipina American and the second woman to preside as the state’s chief justice. During her tenure, she has worked to expand access to the courts, increase the transparency of judicial administration, and promote civics literacy in schools. Recommendations from her Pretrial Detention Reform Workgroup led to legislation replacing California’s money bail system with one based on a defendant’s risk.
