Former Governor of Georgia and Congressman
A former congressman and two-term Republican governor, Deal made criminal justice reform a centerpiece of his tenure as Georgia’s top elected official, leading an overhaul of adult and juvenile corrections that was embraced with overwhelming bipartisan support. The reforms, which made Georgia a prominent leader in smart justice, have reduced the state prison population without compromising public safety, substantially cut incarceration rates for African-American men and women, and freed up more than $260 million for investment in evidence-based practices.
