Sheriff, Harris County (Texas)
Since his election in 2016, Gonzalez has become a nationally prominent advocate of pretrial detention reform, arguing that longstanding bail practices disproportionately penalize the poor and exacerbate racial disparities in the criminal justice system. He also has expanded his department's efforts to combat human trafficking and elder abuse. Previously, Gonzalez spent 18 years with the Houston Police Department and served three terms on the Houston City Council.
