Before his 13-year tenure as leader of the world's largest science and engineering society, Leshner was director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, where he advanced public understanding and acceptance of addiction as a brain disease and worked with the U.S. Department of Justice to support drug treatment for incarcerated populations. A physiological psychologist by training, Leshner has written and testified extensively about addiction, most recently about the need for new strategies to address the nation's opioid epidemic. prisons to provide programs proven to reduce recidivism, and expands inmates' ability to accumulate earned time credits.
